Summary:
The maoris used to be the only people on New Zealand.
Then all these different types of people came.
Next, James Busby came to represent the British Government.
He then presented a document named the Declaration of Independence.
It contained a few laws and rules about who had what and what could happen on the island.
By 1840 52 chiefs had signed the document. In late January, 1840 William Hobson arrived.
He was sent to bring a treaty for the maori’s to sign.
Overnight however 2 men, Henry and Edward Williams translated the treaty so the maori’s could read it.
The maori then signed the treaty and the 6th of February became Waitangi Day.
