Monday December 9th - Thursday December 12th Adventure Week!

Adventure Week!
From the 9th of December to the 12th my year at school had an adventure week. We had a large variety of options each day to choose from.

Day 1!
From 9 to 10:30 I chose to help paint a mural. It was loads of fun and I got paint everywhere on me.
After that we had break then I went off to ice skating. At first I couldn't skate but once I got the hang of it, it was easy and fun. I had a close collision though with my friend Willow when I went to turn around and she stopped. It was funny and we cracked up laughing. When ice skating finished we came back to school and I played cards with my friends. Then it was home time.

Day 2!
On day 2 I completed a photography scavenger hunt. We got to travel around the city in the school vans taking photo's. Before we left we brainstormed where we would go first. The majority of the kids going wanted to go to the botanical gardens so we left to there. We took lots of photos while we were driving and walking around. After botanical gardens we went to New Brighton and took photos of the whale pool and us all eating ice creams.I then spent the rest of the afternoon playing ToxicCode and designing a movie cover. Here is a photo of my cover.

Day 3!
On this day I spent the day at school. I made harakeke flowers and made biscuits for cooking. It was a pretty relaxed and cruisey day so I enjoyed it.

Day 4!
The whole class went to Jellie Park for a swim. In total there were somewhere around 664 kids there because there were a lot of other schools swimming there too. I went on the hydroslides with my friends and jumped off the smaller diving board. It was fun but I had to leave early because I had to go to my step-dad's niece's wedding. It was fun too.

Part of one of my stories

This is my boarding school story I have made up. This is only part of it though. I hope you enjoy it.

The Boarding School Disaster

Click!
The door swung shut as I, Avaree, entered my parents house only to find they had been waiting for me. “But you guys are normally working, I normally come home to find the house empty.”
“Yes darling, but we have some wonderful news for you.”
“Oh-kay.”
“Sit down!”
At that time mum and dad told me they were sending me away to boarding school. Like boarding school was bad going now was TORTURE.“Avaree, you leave in a few days.” My parents told me so nicely, I didn’t want to disappoint them. But I really didn’t want to go.
“Hey, mum and dad, I don’t want to be mean or rude, but I really, really, really don’t want to go.”
I tried to tell my parents but everything they said was about the fact that everything was ready to go but “once again” I was ruining their detailed plans.
“Please can Lea come with me at least. Like you obviously want me to be happy and concentrate and get good grades and stuff. If Lea was there I would work harder. Otherwise I will be alone. Lea is my twin so it’s not like she’s 4 quadrillion years older than me and won’t be able to enrol. Please mum, please.”
“Alright then, Lea can go. But you better hurry because when you wake up tomorrow we’ll be packing your bags to go.”
“But I’m not leaving tomorrow. Couldn’t I pack them on Monday?”
“I guess you could but it would be your last day at West Gardens High School. If you were staying here, you wouldn’t get to say farewell to your friends.”
“I guess that’s a point.”
“Very well, tomorrow it is then.”
“Okay.”
If only I’d had more notice. And I could choose where I went.
“Hello? Avaree? Thank you, I’ve been trying to get you’re attention. Please don’t ignore me. Also, by the way you are going to Brisbane because you’re cousin Ella will be there to watch you. She is two years older than you so she is a golden leader of the school. When I enrolled you the email said your  buddies to show you around for the day are Ella Ottello and Harmony Ottello your cousins. Harmony is Ella’s older sister. Got it.”
“I think so.”
“Alright, now that that is done you can go to bed, hurry up.”
“Message obeyed.”
God that is confusing. I could use a little sleep right-yawn-now.

The Next Day - 8:00am
“Lea, Avaree, get ready to pack. Today’s the exciting day. You guys get to pack for boarding school.”
“I’m so excited Avaree!”
“Really, because I’m not.”
“Why not?”
“I don’t want to leave everyone. Family and friends, pets and community.”
“I understand greatly. Now let's get ready, and quickly.”
“Alright then.”
“Oh my”
“Oh my what?”
“Nothing silly, It’s just the fact you have so much stuff to take.”
Well obvio-”
“Are you coming girls?”
“Yes of course mum. We were just chatting.”

Everyone piled up the boot with luggage and the twins’s older sister Elenor was on her spring break and had come up from her college to help move the girls.

Pobble Literacy Work

Sick Sentences!

These sentences are ‘sick’ and need help to get better. Can you help? You might be able to use some of the words you have thought of for number 1! The man was swimming next to the big fish. The big fish was swimming in the sea.
The man was snorkeling in the sea. He swam with the giant whale travelling next to him and the whale was looking for other fish in the sea.

Sentence Challenge!
Using your senses is a great way to make your writing exciting! Imagine you could hear what was happening in this picture. Which ‘sounds’ words would describe what was happening? (e.g. splash, gurgle...) Imagine you could feel the water and the whale. What describing words would tell the reader what they both feel like?
The sharky thing is smooth and slippery, the water freezes me like I'm standing in an ice-cube. I puff out water and make a slushing sound with the bubbles.

Question Time?
What creature can you see in the picture? Shark? Fish?
How many people can you see? 1.
How do you think the person in the picture is feeling? Nervous, Scared, Worried, Anxious.
What might happen next? Lots more sharks come past and the man is stuck.
What other creatures might live in the ocean nearby? Whales, fish, Sharks, Stingrays, Jellyfish.etc.

Picture This!
Look carefully at the photograph and imagine you could zoom out. What might be happening just underneath the shark/beside the man/close to them in the water? Write or draw what you think!
There might be another, bigger shark swimming next to the shark. There is another person who has a camera taking the photo. A ship is sailing on top of the water.

Poem!
I float, above a creature.
The icy water covering me, I struggle to survive.

Next the fish takes a breath and swallows me whole.
I’m gone but it feels better,
To be out of the frozen water.

Then he burps, and I escape, then return to where I started.
I’m happy I’m back, although I won’t ever return to the water.

Converting between fractions, decimals, tenths and percent

Why 80/100, 0.8, 8/10, ⅘ and 80% all show the same value.
I have shaded 80 out of the 100 squares in this table.
If you have something out of 100 it is written as a percentage.
Since this is 80 squares shaded, it is written as 80%. 80% is equal to 80/100’s.

In this picture I have split the grid into tenths.
There is still the same amount as the last picture but it is just a different way of showing it.
Each column with ten squares is 1 tenth.
Here I have shaded 8 columns which means there are 8 tenths. 8 tenths is another way of saying 0.8 or 8/10.

In this grid I have split the squares into 5 different groups.
These groups are called fifths, and here I have 4 groups shaded which is written as ⅘.
